PADI Junior Scuba Water Diver

What is it?

The PADI Junior Scuba Diver course is great if your child has limited time to complete their course, or if you want the reassurance that your child will always dive with a dive professional and not dive more than 12 metres deep. If is also a great stepping stone towards the PADI Open Water Diver qualification.

The PADI Junior Scuba Diver qualification is recognised in more countries around the world than any other and is your ticket to dive charters, resort diving, equipment rentals and opportunities to expand your diving skills by going on to complete the full Junior Open Water Diver qualification. Scuba Divers are only able to dive under the direct supervision of a PADI professional.

Once you have gained your Junior Scuba Diver qualification it is yours for life, with automatic upgrade at 15 to the full adult qualification. If you don’t dive for a period you can complete a short PADI Scuba Review to bring yourself up to date and get back into diving.

Who can take part?

Virtually anyone in good health who is reasonably fit and comfortable in the water can complete the PADI Junior Scuba Diver Course. You must be able to swim a minimum of 200 metres and tread water/float for ten minutes. You will have to complete a medical declaration prior to starting the course and if you have any medical conditions that may be of concern, a medical certificate is required prior to starting any practical sessions.

Anyone from the age of 10 to 14 can complete the PADI Junior Scuba Diver Course. From 15 you will complete the standard PADI Scuba Diver qualification. Once you achieve the PADI Junior Scuba Diver qualification it is automatically upgraded to the full adult qualification once you reach 15.

What does the course involve?

Knowledge Development

You will read the PADI Open Water Diver Manual and watch the Open Water DVD’s and complete the three knowledge reviews. After completion of each section you will have a review session with your instructor and complete a quiz. This will give you the basic principles and essential knowledge needed for safe and enjoyable diving.

Confined Water Training

You will complete three confined water dives. During these sessions you will apply the dive principles you have learned and practice dive procedures and skills. These sessions will be conducted in a swimming pool.

Open Water Training

You will complete two open water training dives. These complete your training by applying and further developing your knowledge and dive skills in an open water environment under your instructor’s supervision and guidance.

If you decide at a later date that you want to upgrade you qualification to become a Junior Open Water Diver you just need to complete the remaining two knowledge development sessions, two confined water sessions and two open water dives to be come a fully qualified Junior Open Water Diver.

How long will it take?

We run the academic and confined water dives over three weeks on a Thursday evening in Harrogate and a Friday evening in York, starting with an classroom session at Overland Underwater from 6.30-7.30pm, followed by a confined water dive from 8.00-9.30pm at Harrogate Ladies College (Thursdays) or The Mount School pool in York (Fridays).

The open water dives can then be completed over one Sunday and are normally conducted at a dive site called Capernwray which is a great site for your initial open water dives

PADI Programs are performance based. You proceed as you demonstrate mastery of the course skills. This allows you to work at a pace that is comfortable to you. If you need extra time in the classroom, the pool or in open water we undertake to provide any extra training sessions required at no additional cost to yourselves.

Referral Option

Does all this sound great, but you don’t really want to dive in open water in the UK, or you don’t have time to complete the full course before your holiday? Are you going on holiday and want to learn to dive, but don’t want to spend valuable days of your holiday in the classroom and swimming pool learning basic skills? Then the PADI Junior Scuba Diver Referral option could be perfect for you. This option allows you to complete all your theory and pool training with us as a nice relaxed pace before you go on holiday. You then have 12 months during which time you can go to any PADI centre anywhere in the world to complete the open water part of the course and qualify as a PADI Scuba Diver.
