PADI Underwater Naturalist

What is it?

Look closer to see more on your next dive. Look for symbioses, predator/prey and other relationships between aquatic plant and animal life. Complete the Underwater Naturalist course and you will learn not just what fish and animals are, but how they interact with each other and the environment.

Who can take part?

Anyone who is qualified as a PADI Open Water Diver, Junior Open Water Diver or who holds an equivalent qualification from another training organisation can enrol on this course.

What does the course involve?

During this course you will learn about:

  • The major aquatic life groupings, interactions and factual information that dispels negative myths.
  • The role of aquatic plants, food chains and predator prey relationships
  • Responsible interactions with aquatic life
  • The underwater naturalist’s view of organisms and their roles in the environment

You will complete two open water dives where you will observe the aquatic plants and animals that inhabit the area and try to see how the organisms are interacting in the environment.

How long will it take?

You will complete a classroom training session after having read the Underwater Naturalist manual and knowledge review. You will then complete two open water training dives that can be done over a single day.
